The most important thing I did before moving abroad

Smart money moves that helped me move abroad

When my family decided to move to the UK, I knew we had to get our finances in order. This would be my second time moving from the US to the UK, and I knew firsthand how quickly the costs could add up. That meant making sure we could afford this new adventure without making money mistakes along the way.

We had some money set aside, but also needed to resolve some debts and figure out how to help our savings grow after we moved. I needed a plan that would let me grow and protect our money while paying off what we owed.

That’s when I found Slay the Stock Market.

This course was created by the fantastic Delyanne Barros, also known as Delyanne The Money Coach. I was inspired by her story of how she went from six-figure debt to millionaire status (and moved from the U.S. to Portugal!).

Delyanne relies on low-risk investments to protect and grow savings. She also emphasizes the importance of investing while still paying off debt. Most importantly, she takes away the overwhelming jargon or pressure to be perfect with your money.

With what I learned, I was able to:
✅ Start investing confidently without feeling lost.
✅ Keep paying down debt while growing our savings.
✅ Navigate moving money abroad, covering expenses and saving along the way.

If you’re stuck wondering whether your money is ready to help you move abroad—whether it's sitting in savings, tangled up in debt, or just not working for you—this course can help. It makes investing approachable and practical, even if you feel like you have no clue where to start.

Travel Find of the Week: Seven Sisters

Have you heard of the "white cliffs of Dover"? Much of the southeast coast of England is made up of white chalk cliffs that tower over the crashing waves. The Seven Sisters are a range of these cliffs that extend between Dover and Brighton.

Hiking these hills make for some incredible views, though it can get pretty windy and you need to use caution near the cliff edges. Check out the Brighton day trip post on the blog to find two tour recommendations that include visits to the area: one small-group tour from London and one boat trip to see the cliffs from the water.

New on the Blog: Tintagel Castle

Ever wanted to visit the place where King Arthur's legend was born? Tintagel Castle in Cornwall is that place. I've added a new guide to visiting the castle ruins set on an oceanside cliff. Check it out here!

See you next week!

Summer in America vs. the UK I was lucky to have a good friend come visit me last week. Her kids have just wrapped up the school year in California and are starting in on summer activities. My nieces and nephews in Florida and Texas have been out of school for a few weeks. Meanwhile, my daughter still has over a month left in the school year. It's strange every year to see signs of US holidays while school is still on here. The differences between school calendars in the US and UK were so...

Hi there! I've been gone a bit longer than planned, so sorry for going quiet. I'm just getting settled back in after spending time back in the US visiting family and friends. It was so nice to be close to people I usually only get to speak to over video. I haven't experienced homesickness much this year, but there will always be a part of my heart that lives in America. American Things That Don't Exist in the UK Any time I go back to the US, my friends ask me what food I've missed and what...

The Housing Culture Shock It's hard to believe it's been nearly three years since I moved my family to the UK (for the second time). In spite of how long we've been here, and having now experienced several different rental houses, we are still sometimes surprised by what's normal in homes here compared to the US. From living in a rainy country with no clothes dryer to tiptoeing up steep staircases, we've definitely had to adapt. I recently updated my blog article 30 Big Differences Between...
